FASTIDIO. – A Pelagian, who lived at the beginning of the fifth century, « Britannorum episcopus », who « scripsit ad Fatalem quendam de vita Christiana librum et alium de viduitate servanda, sana et Deo digna doctrina » (Gennadius, De viria illustr., 56: PL 58, 1091). It is not known what the see of the bishop of the Britons was.
According to J. Morin, the De vita Christiana should not be confused with the treatise of the same name included among the works of St. Augustine (PL 40, 1031–26); and the De viduitate servanda would have been lost. It nevertheless seems that at least a substantial echo of it survives in a booklet by Caesarius of Arles (PL 67, 1094–98). According to the same Morin, other works, too, should be attributed to him. In C. P. Caspari’s new edition of the Corpus Pelagianum, in fact, there are six writings (two letters without their heading, Tractatus de divitiis, De malis doctoribus et operibus Fidei et de iudicio futuro, De possibilitate non peccandi, De castitate), all Pelagian in tone and to be attributed to the same author. Now, Morin recognized in the first letter the De doctrina Christiana of F.; therefore the other writings also, since they are by the same author, must be attributed to this same F. This conclusion is also accepted by K. Künste and J. Baer.
