FIACCHI, LUIGI. - Priest, fabulist, known in Greek as Clasio. Born at Scarperia di Mugello on June 4, 1754, died at Florence on May 25, 1825. He taught mathematics and philosophy first in the Seminary of Florence, then in the Scuole Leopoldine, and was a member of the Accademia della Crusca.
He wrote: Dei proverbi toscani; Osservazioni sul Decamerone; Lezione sopra alcuni luoghi della Divina Commedia; he edited the edition of the works of Lorenzo the Magnificent, of Varchi, of Cavalca, of Simone Sigoli. Drawn to satire, he composed novellas in verse and the mock-heroic poem La treccia rubata. A fine Latinist in the Carmina and in the Lusus pastoralis, he also left translations of certain hymns of the Church and the poetic paraphrase of the Dies irae, Gli Evangeli della domenica e le principali feste dell'anno and
Le pastorali per il S. Natale. His major work is the Favole (Florence 1807), composed for pedagogical purposes - F. was called the Christian Aesop - in which, in a purity of Mugello language, he reveals his best qualities as an educator and a poet.
