SIGOLI, SIMONE. - Born in Florence in the early decades of the 14th century.
His coat of arms displays, on an azure field, three "ségoli" with golden handles. In 1384, together with some companions, he made a journey to the East lasting about a year, touching Alexandria, Cairo, Sinai, Gaza, Hebron, Bethlehem, Nazareth, Jerusalem, the Jordan, Tiberias, and finally Damascus. His account, entitled Viaggio al Monte Sinai (it should be compared with the Viaggio in Terra Santa of N. Frescobaldi, his companion on the pilgrimage, and with the Libro d'oltre mare of Niccolò da Poggibonsi, a Franciscan, who made the crossing in 1345 and dwelt in Palestine for four years), is an important document for knowledge of the history of the Holy Places as they appeared to the pilgrims of the 14th century, and a text "of the good century" among the most admired.
