FRANCISCO de San Luis. - Portuguese cardinal and writer, b. at Ponte de Lima on 26 Jan. 1766, d. at Marvilla on 7 May 1845. At the age of 14 he became a Benedictine, and soon rose to high rank in the ecclesiastical hierarchy (Bishop of Coimbra, then cardinal and patriarch of Lisbon) and in the secular sphere (member of the Regency, president of the Chamber of Deputies, minister, etc.).
He left numerous publications, generally concerning the Portuguese kings. As a writer he is heavy and artificial. To distinguish him from others of the same name he is usually referred to as Cardinal Saraiva. His secular name was, in fact, F. Justiniano de S.
