FRANCISCO de SAN LUIS. — Portuguese cardinal and writer, born in Ponte de Lima on 26 January 1766, died at Marvilla on 7 May 1845. He became a Benedictine at the age of 14 and soon attained high positions in both the ecclesiastical hierarchy (bishop of Coimbra, then cardinal and patriarch of Lisbon) and the secular sphere (member of the Regency, president of the Chamber of Deputies, minister, etc.).
He left numerous publications concerning, in general, the Portuguese kings. As a writer, he is ponderous and artificial. To distinguish him from others bearing the same name, he is generally designated as Cardinal Saraiva. In the world, in fact, his name was F. Justiniano de S.
