LIPPI, FRANCO, beato. - Carmelite, better known under the name Franco of Siena, b. 3 Dec. 1211 at Grotti (near Siena), d. 11 Dec. 1291 at Siena. Left without his parents, he enlisted as a young man in the militia in the pay of the Sienese, and gave himself over to a scandalous life. At the age of 65 he was converted and made a most rigorous public penance; 5 years later he became a lay brother of the Carmelites at Siena. Endowed with charisms, with visions and prophecy, his death was accompanied by heavenly prodigies. His cult was approved in 1308 by Clement V; his feast is celebrated, in the Carmelite Order, on 11 Dec.
