LANDTSPERGER, JOHANNES. – German Carmelite, born between 1460 and 1470, probably at Landsberg am Lech (Swabia), died ca. 1528 at Bern (Switzerland). Having studied at the Universities of Ingolstadt (1487) and Leipzig (1494), he entered the Carmelites at Augsburg, where he followed the Anabaptist movement.
He published a book by G. Hutt on how Holy Scripture should be compared and judged (Ain Christliche underrichtung, wie die göttlich Geschriftt vergleycht und geurayst soll werden). Persecuted for this reason by the city magistrate (then still Catholic), he fled to Bern, where he died shortly thereafter. Among his works, the most important are: Über den Zehent (1524); Kommunion unter beiden Gestalten (1524); Über die Taufe (1526, 1528); Die Messe (1528); Über Widersprüche in Luthers Werken (1527).
