LANDTSPERGER, JOHANNES

LANDTSPERGER, JOHANNES. - German Carmelite, born between 1460 and 1470, probably in Landsberg am Lech (Swabia), died c. 1528 in Bern (Switzerland). He studied at the universities of Ingolstadt (1487) and Leipzig (1494), then entered the Carmelites in Augsburg, where he became involved in the Anabaptist movement.

He published a book by G. Hutt on how to compare and judge Holy Scripture (*Ain Christliche underrichtung, wie die göttlich Geschrift vergleicht und geurtaxt soll werden*). Persecuted by the city authorities (still Catholic at the time), he fled to Bern, where he died shortly afterward. Among his most important works are: *Über den Zehent* (1524); *Kommunion unter beiden Gestalten* (1524); *Über die Taufe* (1526, 1528); *Die Messe* (1528); *Über Widersprüche in Luthers Werken* (1527).
