LANFRANCO DA CREMA (or da Cremona). - Born in 1189, died in Bologna on 27 February 1229; remembered as one of the famous master jurists of Bologna.

According to Diplovotaccio, he would have taught the utrumque ius (canon and civil law), but Sarti raises doubts, because in his time the union of the two laws had not yet been brought about. His glosses nevertheless reveal a civil-law culture, and his citations of canonists also suggest his knowledge of the law of the Church. From an internal examination of his glosses one may deduce that he would have made and glossed the first three Compilationes antiquae. The famous Tancred made use of them in compiling his Apparatus. His glosses bear the abbreviations L., La., Lan., which caused him sometimes to be confused with Laurentius, a Spanish canonist. To this confusion of abbreviations Kuttner attributes the reputation of L. as a canonist, which he, along with others, regards as an error. Gillmann has demonstrated that the glosses attributed to L. are actually by Laurentius. It seems instead that L. was the first who conceived the unity of the utrumque ius and that he was one of the first to carry on for a longer time the teaching of the two combined laws at Bologna.

In 1203 he went with others to open the Studium of Vicenza, which, however, did not have a long life and was dissolved in 1209; he returned almost immediately to Bologna. Around 1217 he entered as an oblate (the Necrologium of St. Salvatore calls him conversus) among the Canons Regular of St. Maria del Reno near Bologna, to whom, at his death, he left many goods. He is sometimes cited by the ancient canonists.
