Tancred (Tancredus)

TANCREDI (Tancredus). — Canonist, born at Bologna around 1185, died there between 1234 and 1236.

A canon and subsequently archdeacon of Bologna (1226), he is known from as early as 1214 as decretorum magister; he was also grand chancellor of the University. In addition to teaching, he received numerous commissions of confidence from the pontiffs Innocent III, Honorius III, and Gregory IX, especially to settle disputes and eliminate abuses (the case against the podestà of Mantua concerning Massa Fiscalia, the excommunication of the praetor of Florence over the privilege of the forum, the dispute between the archbishop of Ravenna and the city of Cervia, and that between the abbot of Nonantola and the bishop of Pistoia). He took part in settling disputes in Bologna itself (the monks of S. Michele against the Chapter, the bishop against the Canons Regular of S. Salvatore, the Bolognese and the Modenese, the bishop and the Commune); he was a member of the Commission for the canonization of s. Domenico. When Honorius III published the Compilatio quinta, he dedicated it to him, recommending its dissemination and observance in schools and tribunals. His genuine works are: Ordo iudiciarius, written between 1214 and 1216, reworked by Bartolomeo da Brescia in 1236 (latest ed., edited by F. Bergmann, Gottinga 1842); Summa de matrimonio, written between 1210 and 1214 (latest ed., edited by A. Wunderlich, Gottinga 1841); Apparatus ad Compilationem I, II, III: the first (1210–15) is included in the ordinary gloss, the second (written before 1215) was reworked together with the first after 1220, the third (1220) is included in the ordinary gloss; Glossae ad Compilationem V; Provinciale (manuscripts at Bamberga and Einsielden).
