SIMONE di BISIGNANO. - Jurist, native of Bisignano (Cosenza), who lived in the 12th century.
He was a follower of Graziano; between 5 March 1177 and March 1179 he completed the composition of his Summa, which may be regarded as a gloss upon and continuation of the Decretum Gratiani, insofar as it makes use of subsequent papal legislation. His entire work (Summa and Glossa) remains unpublished and is scattered among manuscripts in Bamberg, Augsburg, London, Paris, Rome, and Rouen; it is important for its independence of judgment, the rationality and systematic character of its criticism, and its influence upon later summists and glossators.
