SARTI, EMILIANO. - Scholar, b. in Rome in 1795, d. there in 1849. He was a writer for the Hebrew language at the Vatican Library and a professor at the Sapienza.

His literary output was scanty; he had, however, the merit of collecting many epigraphic texts, which he partly published. His note cards passed to his friend G. Pelliccioni, professor in Bologna, and from him to G. B. De Rossi; they are now in the Vatican Library. The principal core of the collection is formed by the inscriptions found in the Cartoni excavations in the Ostian area near the chapel of St. Herculanus, between 1824-25; many are now in the Lateran Museum, others in the Capitoline Museum; some epigraphs come from the Ostian excavations of Cardinal B. Pacca, also from 1825; others from the Lipsanotheca of the Vicariate. Christian inscriptions were edited by him in collaboration with G. Settele in 1840, as an appendix to the work of F. L. Dionisi: Monumenta sacra Basilicae Vaticanae Cryptarum (Rome 1773). He collaborated with Mommsen for the CIL.
