Kersbele (Kersbell), Philippe

KERSBELE (KERSBELL), PHILIPPE. - Carmelite theologian, b. in Ghent (Belgium) around 1462, d. in Paris on 20 November 1489.

An ardent defender of the Immaculate Conception of Mary, he wrote the De conceptione Mariae (London, British Museum, mss. Harley 3838), which, though profound from the theological point of view, seemed to his contemporaries not sufficiently elegant in literary form. It was principally directed against the work of the Master General of the Dominicans, Vincenzo Bandelli.
