FRUGONI, CARLO INNOCENZO. - Poet, b. in Genova on 21 Nov. 1692, d. in Parma on 20 Dec. 1768. He spent most of his life at the Farnese court, praised and acclaimed as the greatest lyric poet of his age.
In his youth he had entered the Order of the Somaschi, which he soon left through the intervention of Card. Bentivoglio, and of whose education very little remained in the worldly and erotic character of his lyric poetry. His exceedingly vast poetic production (collected in 10 vols. in the complete edition of the Opere poetiche, Parma 1779) is an eloquent, rhetorical, frivolous epitome of the poetic taste of Arcadia, which
