FRANCIS OF BARBERINO (Francesco di Neri di Ranuccio). - Poet, b. at Barberino in 1264, d. at Florence in 1348. He practiced the profession of notary at Bologna and at Florence. Exiled from Florence, he lived for a long time at Venice, in Provence, in Picardy. He was able to return to Florence in 1315, where he then lived until his death.

He wrote the Documenti d'amore (the illuminated autograph is in the Vatican Library), a collection of moral "ammastramenti" (cf. the ed. by F. Egidi, 4 vols., Rome 1995-97) and the treatise Del reggimento e costumi di donna (cf. the ed. by C. Baudi di Vesme, Bologna 1875), where the didactic material, related by an allegorical composition of Provençal and stilnovistic taste, is often developed with perspicacity of observation and with an interest more attentive, however, to external behavior than to the life of the conscience. His gift as a "poet" is entrusted to a few "sketches" of fourteenth-century family and city life, fresh and serene in their immediacy.
