GASTOUÉ, AMÉDÉE. - Musicologist and musician, b. in Paris on 13 March 1873, d. there on 29 July 1943. A pupil of the Conservatory, he subsequently became choirmaster at the church of S. Giovanni Battista in Belleville and a teacher of Gregorian chant.
Besides numerous articles in various journals, he wrote works of great importance on musical history, even in their disputed parts, the fruit of profound studies and research in the libraries of France: Histoire du chant liturgique à Paris
(1 vol. up to the work of the Carolingians, Paris 1904); Le drame liturgique (there 1906); Les origines du chant romain; l'antiphonaire grégorien (there 1907); Le graduel et l'antiphonaire romain, histoire et description (there 1813). He also published liturgical chants and theoretical works, as well as transcriptions of ancient liturgical chants.
He was a member of the Pontifical Commission for the Vatican edition of the books of liturgical chant, but his theories on Gregorian rhythm did not coincide with those of the Solesmes School of Marqueron.
