Gaisser, Ugo Atanasio

GAISSER, Ugo ATANASIO. - Musicologist, b. at Aitrach on 1 Dec. 1853, d. at Ettal on 6 Oct. 1920.

A Benedictine monk at Beuron, he later moved to Maredsous, where in 1878 he was ordained a priest. Having specialized in the study of Byzantine sacred music, in 1896 he was called to the Greek College of St. Athanasius in Rome, where he was a professor and reader of Greek chants. He wrote on Greek musical historiography in various journals. Notable publications also include Le système musical de l'Église grecque d'après la tradition (Rome 1901) and Les « heirmus » de Pâques dans l'office grec (ibid. 1905).
