FUSCO, ALFONSO MARIA. — Priest, born in Angri (Campania) on March 23, 1839, died there on February 6, 1970. Having entered the Seminary of Nocera de' Pagani at a young age, he was ordained priest on May 30, 1869.
Devoted to the apostolic ministry, in 1856 he tirelessly assisted those afflicted by cholera. On September 26, 1878, together with Maddalena Caputo, a woman of outstanding intellect, he founded the Sisters of St. John the Baptist for the instruction and education of the children of the people. Humble, pious, and poor, he dedicated all his energies to the spiritual good of his Institute, which he saw grow, multiply, and reach distant lands. The cause of his beatification is underway.
