LEONE, GIUSEPPE. - Redemptorist, b. at Trinitapoli (Foggia) on 23 May 1829, d. at Angri (Salerno) on 7 Aug. 1902.
Although almost always infirm, he exercised among religious souls a fruitful apostolate of active and contemplative life; he published some twenty spiritual books; he wrote devotional songs and a great many letters to foster eucharistic and Marian devotion. Endowed with singular mystical gifts, he directed persons of every social class: among them the servants of God A. Fusco, founder of the Battistine sisters, and Bartolo Longo, whom he guided for 18 years (1885-1902), taking a most effective part in the completion of the sanctuary of Pompeii and in the establishment of the charitable works attached to it, especially of the Daughters of the Rosary, for which he dictated a Rule. The process for his beatification is under way.
