LEONE, GIUSEPPE. - Redemptorist, b. at Trinitapoli (Foggia) on 23 May 1829, d. at Angri (Salerno) on 7 Aug. 1902.
Although almost always ill, he exercised a fruitful apostolate of active and contemplative life among religious souls; he published some twenty spiritual books; he wrote devotional songs and very many letters to foster Eucharistic and Marian devotion. Endowed with singular mystical gifts, he directed persons of every social class, including the servants of God A. Fusco, founder of the Battistine Sisters, and Bartolo Longo, whom he guided for eighteen years (1885–1902), taking a most effective part in the completion of the sanctuary of Pompei and in the establishment of the associated charitable works, especially that of the Figlie del Rosario, for whom he drafted a Rule. The process for his beatification is under way.
