Although almost always in poor health, he exercised a fruitful apostolate of active and contemplative life among religious souls; he published some twenty spiritual books; he wrote devotional songs and very many letters to foster Eucharistic and Marian devotion. Endowed with singular mystical gifts, he guided people of every social class, among them Servant of God Alfonso Maria Fusco, founder of the Sisters of St John the Baptist, and Bartolo Longo, whom he directed for 18 years (1885–1902), taking a most effective part in the completion of the Pompeii sanctuary and in the establishment of its associated charitable works, especially the Daughters of the Rosary, for whom he drew up a Rule. The process for his beatification is underway.
