GERARD MAIELLA, St. — Born on 23 April 1726 in Muro Lucano (Potenza) into an artisan family, died at Materdomini on 16 October 1755. He first served as sacristan in his hometown, then became a chamberlain to Bishop Albini in Lacedonia; upon the bishop’s death (1744) he returned home and sought admission among the Capuchins, but was refused, and for a time attempted an eremitical life.
