GAUCHERIO, Saint. - Born shortly after the middle of the 11th century, at Melain, diocese of Rouen, died near Limoges around 1139-40. At the age of 18, after having studied the liberal arts in his native country, he was taken to Aquitaine by a canon of Limoges, Master Umberto. There he devoted himself to a life of penance and apostolate, founding near Limoges a priory of Regular Canons of St. Augustine, at first dependent on the canons of the Chapter, from whom he had obtained the site. He had many disciples, among them St. Stephen of Muret, founder of the Grandmontine Order. He died from an accident, falling from a horse, at the age of 80. The translation (canonization) was carried out by the bishop of Limoges, Serbrando, in 1194. Feast on 9 April.
