GAUCHERIO, saint. – Born shortly after the middle of the 11th century at Melain, in the diocese of Rouen; died near
Limoges ca. 1139–40. At the age of 18, after studying the liberal arts in his native land, he was taken to Aquitaine by a canon of Limoges, Master Umberto. There he devoted himself to a life of penance and apostolate, founding near Limoges a priory of Canons Regular of St Augustine, initially dependent on the canons of the Chapter, from whom he had obtained the site. He had many disciples, among them St Stephen de Mureto, founder of the Grandmontine Order. He died in an accident, falling from his horse, at the age of 80. The translation (canonization) was carried out by the bishop of Limoges, Serbrando, in 1194. Feast day: 9 April.
