GAUGHRAN, ANTONY. - Born in Chapelizod, diocese of Dublin, on 5 Feb. 1849, he entered the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1866 and was ordained priest in 1872. In 1886 he was appointed first Apostolic Vicar of the Apostolic Vicariate of the Orange Free State in southern Africa (renamed Kimberley in 1918). Archbishop G. devoted himself to organizing the apostolate among the white population in the diamond-mining territory, founding new stations and erecting schools run by brothers and sisters. During the Boer War he died in Kimberley on 15 Jan. 1901.
After the war, the work was continued by his elder brother Matthew, who was born on 7 Apr. 1843 in Stillorgan, diocese of Dublin, entered the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1861, was ordained priest in 1867, and in 1902 became Apostolic Vicar of the Orange Free State; he died on 1 June 1914 in Cape Town.
