GAUGHRAN, ANTONY. - Born at Chapelizod, diocese of Dublin, on 5 February 1849, in 1866 he entered the Oblates of Mary Immaculate and in 1872 he was ordained a priest. In 1886 he was appointed first vicar apostolic of the apostolic vicariate of the Orange Free State in southern Africa (from 1918 called Kimberley). For his part, Msgr. G. worked for the organization of the apostolate among the whites in the territory of the diamond mines, founding new stations and erecting schools directed by brothers and sisters. During the Boer War he died at Kimberley on 15 January 1901.
After the war his work was continued by his elder brother Matthew, who was born on 7 April 1843 at Stillorgan, diocese of Dublin, in 1861 entered the Oblates of Mary Immaculate, in 1867 was ordained a priest, and in 1902 became vicar apostolic of the Orange Free State; he died on 1 June 1914 at Capetown.
