GAUGHRAN, ANTONY. - Born at Chapelizod, diocese of Dublin, on 5 February 1849, he entered the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1866 and became a priest in 1872. In 1886 he was appointed first apostolic vicar of the apostolic vicariate of the Orange Free State in southern Africa (called Kimberley from 1918). Monsignor G. devoted himself to organizing the apostolate among the whites in the diamond-mining region, founding new stations and establishing schools directed by brothers and sisters. During the Boer War he died at Kimberley on 15 January 1901.
After the war his work was continued by his elder brother Matthew, who was born on 7 April 1843 at Stillorgan, diocese of Dublin, entered the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in 1861, became a priest in 1867, and in 1902 became apostolic vicar of the Orange Free State; he died on 1 June 1914 at Capetown.
