GERSEN, GIOVANNI. - Ancient Italian manuscripts of the De imitazione Christi attribute its authorship to an abbot Joannes G., of whom nothing precise is known.
He is said to have been a native of Cavaglià in Piedmont, a monk in the Benedictine monastery of SS. Vincenzo ed Anastasio de la Cella in that place, then abbot of S. Stefano in Vercelli, between 1220 and 1234, when the name of the abbot who lived in those years is lacking.
