GERSEN, GIOVANNI. - Ancient Italian manuscripts of the De imitatione Christi attribute its authorship to an abbot Joannes G., about whom nothing precise is known.
He is held to have been a native of Cavaglià in Piedmont, a monk in the Benedictine monastery of Sts. Vincent and Anastasius de la Cella in that place, and later abbot of S. Stefano in Vercelli, between 1220 and 1234, when the name of the abbot who lived in those years is missing.
