PIETRASANTA, JACOPO da. - Architect active in Rome from 1452 to 1490. He was at first, it seems, a simple stonecutter and contractor of works, that is, an executor of other artists' designs.

As such he worked on the building projects of the Campidoglio (1452); in the Vatican on the loggia of the benediction under Pius II (1463-64), and then with Meo del Caprina and Giovannino de' Dolci on the great works carried out under Sixtus IV; and in the sacred convent of Assisi (1473). In 1483 he is designated as « magister architectorum » for the church of S. Agostino, of which criticism tends to attribute to him not only the construction but the design itself, precisely because of the incoherence of its layout, in which Gothic and Renaissance elements are uncertainly fused, and which is explained by considering it the work more of a builder than of an architect.
