JAMES OF LILIENSTEIN. - Dominican theologian of the early 16th century. A professor of theology at the philosophical-theological academy of Budapest, run by the Dominicans, G. wrote from 1504 to 1505 a Liber de divina sapientia which he dedicated to Vladislaus II, king of Hungary (1490-1516). So far only one manuscript is known, at Munich (Clm. 26827), described by Grabmann.

G.'s scholastic and mystical work is inspired by the Suonian concept of eternal Wisdom; his style approaches the humanistic manner. The five books of the work concern divine Wisdom in relation to: 1) the mysteries and works of God, 2) the human intellect and its acts, 3) the world of the angels and of man in his spiritual and corporeal parts, 4) the 3 theological virtues, 5) the 4 cardinal virtues, and they are subdivided into "eulogia". The material of the principal questions of theology and philosophy is developed in an original systematic form, without subtleties.
