JULIAN OF SPEYER (Theutonicus). - Franciscan scholar and musician, b. at Speyer at the end of the 12th century, d. at Paris ca. 1250. He was a famous master of singing at the court of France before becoming a Minorite (ca. 1225); he probably took part in the General Chapter of Assisi of 1227 and was a companion of the provincial of Germany (Fra' Simone Anglico), afterwards returning to Paris, where he mostly lived (he held there the office of "corrector," or master of reading for the friars in choir and at table, and perhaps also taught singing in the conventual Studium).
Praised by historians for his literary and musical expertise and for the holiness of his life, G. composed the rhythmic offices, "in littera et cantu," of St. Francis and St. Anthony, with the hymns and responsories, and furthermore a life of St. Francis in elegant prose (Ad hoc quorundam, 1232-33) which faithfully follows the first biography by Fra' Tommaso da Celano (v.). To him must also be attributed the "second" or "anonymous" Legenda Antoniana (ca. 1240). G. is one of the first representatives of the long series of Franciscan poets and musicians who succeeded one another over the centuries; even the melodies of the man from Speyer are judged by today's critics to be of great value for their originality, refinement and firmness of structure, superior to the decadent forms of his time.
