GIULIANO SABA, Saint. — Died around 377. He is commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on January 14 and October 18; on the latter date also among the Greeks. St. John Chrysostom mentions him in a homily delivered in Antioch to his listeners who had known him. Born of poor parents, he was a rustic man, unlearned but full of virtue.
He withdrew to a hut on the borders of the Oschoene, living in penance. Many Christians, drawn by his holiness, came to him to share his way of life. He built a basilica on Mount Sinai, in the place where, according to tradition, God appeared to Moses. During the reign of Valens the Arians spread the rumor that G. shared their ideas; therefore, at the request of the Christians, he went to that city to expose their calumny. He then returned to his solitude. Theodoret of Cyrus wrote his biography.
