JULIAN SABAS, Saint. - Died around 377. He is commemorated in the Roman Martyrology on January 14 and October 18; on this second date also by the Greeks. St. John Chrysostom recalls him in a homily delivered at Antioch to his hearers who had known him. Born of poor parents, he was a rustic man, unlearned, but full of virtue.

He withdrew to a hovel on the borders of Osroene, living in penance. Many Christians, attracted by his holiness, flocked to him to share his manner of life. He built a basilica on Mount Sinai, in the place where, according to tradition, God appeared to Moses. During the reign of Valens the Arians spread the rumor that G. shared their ideas; therefore, urged by the Christians, he went to that city to expose their calumny. He then returned to his solitude. Theodoret of Cyrrhus wrote his biography.
