GIUSEPPINI DEL BELGIO

JOSEPHINES OF BELGIUM. - They were founded at Crommont in Flanders in 1817 by the canon C. van Crombrugghe (1798-1865). Originally intended for primary teaching, the J. later devoted themselves also to commercial teaching, and after 1850 they added the literary teaching of Greek and Latin.

Further foundations followed at Melle and Louvain. They received the decree of praise in 1863, and in 1897 they became a priestly Congregation with simple vows. The constitutions were definitively approved in 1930. After the First World War the Institute opened houses in mission territories: in 1924 in Brazil and in 1929 in Kasai (Belgian Congo).

At present the J. have 8 houses, 2 of them in England, with 200 members.
