JOHN MARY BAPTIST VIANNEY, Saint. - Born at Dardilly near Lyons on 8 May 1786, died at Ars on 4 Aug. 1859. Raised in a religious family environment, as a young man he was a shepherd and a field worker. Having begun his studies in the period following the Revolution, under the guidance of the curate of Ecully, and being inclined to the priesthood, he entered the Seminary of Verrières, where he was noted for a profound piety. Having returned in 1813 to Ecully, where he studied theology, he then entered the Seminary of Lyons, in which he was ordained a priest on 9 Aug. 1815.
He was for three years vicar at Ecully, and in 1818 he went as parish priest to Ars, a humble village of the ancient principality of Dombes, where for 41 years he was a faithful minister of God and a great benefactor of souls. The fame of his virtues soon crossed the boundaries of the parish, and from every side people of various conditions flocked to him to receive counsel and spiritual direction. He constantly spent most of his time in the confessional, occupied also in the explanation of catechisms and in Sunday homilies. A model of parish priests for his simple humility and apostolic zeal, he was beatified by Pius X on 17 Apr. 1904 and canonized by Pius XI on 31 May 1925. Proclaimed patron of parish priests by Pius XI with the apostolic letter Anno Iubilari, of 23 Apr. 1929 (AAS, 21 [1929], pp. 312-13).
