GOAR, JACQUES. - Orientalist of the Order of Preachers, b. in Paris in 1601, d. September 23, 1653. Ordained a priest, he devoted himself to the study of the Greek language and literature, and, in order to know better the institutions of the Byzantine Church, he went to the East, where he was prior of the convent of Chios, and where he deepened his knowledge of the customs and religious ceremonies of the Easterners. Upon his return, he is found in Rome in 1637 as prior at St. Sixtus, then in Paris in 1642.

During his numerous travels, he had occasion to consult the manuscripts of various libraries, especially in Paris and Rome, and of the monastery of Grottaferrata, always keeping in close contact with the scholars of his time Basilio Falasca, Leone Allazio, G. Corcoio, Pantaleone Liguridio, etc. The fruit of his studies are the commentary on the work of G. Codino: De Officiis magnae ecclesiae et aulae Constantinopolitanae (Paris 1648), and many other works of lesser importance. Nevertheless the masterpiece of G. remains the edition of the Εὐκολόγιον sive Rituale Graecorum (ibid. 1647); another edition with a new title: ibid. 1676, 2nd ed. Venice 1730.
