GUGLIELMO IL BRETONE

WILLIAM THE BRETON. - Franciscan, theologian and biblicist, who lived in the 13th century, of whom Fra Salimbene da Parma speaks in his chronicle; the latter met him at Lyon in 1248 (cf. Cronica, ed. F. Bernini, I, Bari 1942, pp. 333-34).

He is the author of a work highly esteemed, used and copied in the Middle Ages and cited in various ways: Summa difficilium cocobulorum Bibliae ex glossis sanctorum, or else Summa, or Vocabularium or Liber Britonis. Always eager to seek out the true sense of words, in order better to understand their value and force, he sets forth, amid historical, physical and etymological disquisitions, precious and interesting points of view. He also wrote: Postillae super prologos Biblias, and Correctio seu castigatio quorumdam locorum S. Scripturae.
