GUALTIERO di CHATTON. - English Franciscan theologian, born at Chatton (Norwich) in the second half of the 13th century, died at Avignon probably in 1343.
From the Franciscan school of Oxford, of which he was the 53rd regent, he went in 1333 to Avignon, where, on account of his learning, he enjoyed the favour of Giovanni XXII, Benedetto XII, and Clemente VI, who appointed him papal penitentiary and entrusted him with the bishopric of St-Asaph; G. did not, however, take possession of it, because the bishop who held it had not died, as had been reported. He also collaborated on the bull Redemptor noster of 28 November 1336, by which the new Franciscan Constitutions were promulgated.
Two works of his remain: a Commentarius Sententiarum, more extensive in its first part and more concise in the other three, for which reason these are considered rather a reportatio by some pupil, and De pauperitate evangelica.
It is difficult to say with certainty to which philosophical and theological school he belonged; scholars’ judgments vary; certainly, however, G. proves to be a vigorous and subtle critic of Occam and his school.
