WALTER OF CHATTON. - English Franciscan theologian, b. at Chatton (Norwich) in the second half of the 13th century, d. at Avignon probably in 1343.
From the Franciscan school of Oxford, of which he was the 53rd regent, he passed in 1333 to Avignon, where, on account of his learning, he enjoyed the favor of John XXII, Benedict XII and Clement VI, who appointed him papal penitentiary and entrusted him with the bishopric of St-Asaph; of which, however, G. did not take possession, because the bishop who governed it had not died, as rumor had spread. He also collaborated on the bull Redemptor noster of 28 Nov. 1336, with which the new Franciscan Constitutions were promulgated.
Two works of his remain: a Commentarius Sententiarum, more extensive in the first part, more summary in the other three, on account of which these are considered rather a reportatio by some student, and De pauperitate evangelica.
It is difficult to say with certainty to which philosophical and theological school he belongs; and the judgments of scholars vary; certainly, however, G. reveals himself to be a strong and subtle critic of Ockham and his school.
