GUGLIELMO PINCHON, Saint
Bishop of St-Brieuc. Born ca. 1184, died at St-Brieuc on 23 July 1234. He was ordained priest about 1206 and became bishop of St-Brieuc in 1220, continuing the work of building the cathedral begun under Bishop Peter (d. 1212).
He came into conflict with the Duke of Brittany, Pierre de Dreux (known as Mauclerc), over the suppression of the *tierpago* and the refusal to return the *decime infuocate* (Assembly of Redon, 1227). As a result, he was stripped of his goods. The conflict spread throughout Brittany, which was placed under interdict (bull of Gregory IX, 23 May 1228). G. withdrew to Poitiers, where he assisted the ailing bishop until the duke submitted (bull of absolution of Gregory IX, 30 May 1230), after which he returned to St-Brieuc. He was buried in his cathedral. Innocent IV canonized him at Lyon on 15 April 1247. Together with St. Brieuc, he is the principal patron of the diocese. Feast day: 29 July.

All works cast, coordinated, and reprinted under the general title *Storia della Marina pontificia* (10 vols., Rome 1886–93), together with an accompanying *Atlante* of one hundred plates, printed by the Stamperia Vaticana at the behest of Leo XIII. Classical form, critical method, security and freedom of judgment, sound and serene patriotism—these are the typical characteristics of that admirable historical reconstruction, which treats not only of the history of the papal navy but also of Italian naval history, especially military maritime art, which G. knew as a master. Alongside the *Storia*, as a complementary work, there arose the *Vocabolario marino e militare* (Romagna 1889), which, as Manfroni wrote, is undoubtedly the most powerful work in Italian naval science. G. worked on the *Vocabolario* until his final days, leaving unpublished a *Supplement* and, together with it, the *Tavole attiche* in Italian, *Archeologia navale*, an *Epistolario*, and a *Giornale di viaggio*.
