GUIDETTO. – Architect and sculptor who lived between the last decades of the 12th century and the first half of the following one. Probably born in Lombardy, he worked in Lucca (1204), where he is associated with the façade of that Cathedral.
His style can also be seen in the decorations of the façade of S. Michele; his collaboration in the works of the Pieve of Prato is uncertain, where in 1211 a sculptor named Guido was already active in S. Martino of Lucca.
The sculptures and decorations of the façade of the Lucca cathedral, while falling within the orbit of the Pisan style, reveal a more vivid and sharp plasticity and an exceedingly rich and complex decorative development, so as to justify the hypothesis of the northern origin of the artist and his Lombard education. The Pisan-Lucchese style, thanks to G., spread to various areas of Tuscany, in the Valdelsa and in the area of Arezzo.
