GUIDETTO. - Architect and sculptor, active between the last decades of the 12th century and the first half of the following one. Probably Lombard by birth, he worked at Lucca (1204), where he associated his name with the façade of that Cathedral.
His style may also be recognized in the decorations of the façade of S. Michele; his participation in the works of the Pieve of Prato is uncertain, where in 1211 there was a sculptor Guido already active at S. Martino in Lucca.
The sculptures and decorations of the façade of the cathedral of Lucca, although belonging to the orbit of the Pisan style, reveal a more vigorous and incisive plasticity and an exceedingly rich and complex decorative development, such as to justify the hypothesis of the artist’s northern origin and Lombard training. Through G., the Pisan-Lucchese style spread to various areas of Tuscany, in the Valdelsa and in the district of Arezzo.
