HALLER, LEONHARD. — Theologian, born in Nuremberg at the beginning of the 16th century and died in Eichstätt on March 23, 1570. He exercised the priestly ministry in Munich in 1533; the following year in Augsburg, in the church of St. Ulrich, he preached against Luther. In Eichstätt he held various positions until in 1540 he was appointed by Bishop Moritz von Hutten as suffragan of that diocese and consecrated titular bishop of Philadelphia. As representative of Bishop Martin von Schaumberg, he participated, from July 16, 1562 to July 15, 1563, in the Council of Trent, and strenuously opposed the concession in Germany of the chalice to the laity (22nd session).
He wrote: *Grund und Kundschaft aus göttlicher Geschrift und den hl. Vätern, dass Fleisch und Blut Christi in der hl. Mess wachrhftiglich geopfert werd* (Eichstätt 1553) and German translations of some writings by Hoffmeister and Cardinal Stanislao Hosius.
