HALLER, LEONHARD. - Theologian, b. in Nuremberg at the beginning of the 16th century and d. in Eichstätt on 23 March 1570. He exercised the priestly ministry in Munich in 1533; the following year in Augsburg, in the church of St. Ulrich, he preached against Luther. In Eichstätt he held various offices, until in 1540 he was appointed suffragan of that diocese by Bishop Moriz von Hutten and consecrated titular bishop of Philadelphia. As representative of Bishop Martin von Schaumberg he participated, from 16 July 1562 to 15 July 1563, in the Council of Trent, and strenuously opposed the concession in Germany of the chalice to the laity (XXII session).
There exist by him: Grund und Kundschaft aus göttlicher Geschrift und den hl. Vätern, dass Fleisch und Blut Christi in der hl. Mess scahrhftiglich geopfert werd (Eichstätt 1553) and German translations of certain writings of Hoffmeister and of Card. Stanislaus Hosius.
