HALLER, LEONHARD. - Theologian, born at Nuremberg at the beginning of the 16th century and died at Eichstätt on 23 March 1570. He exercised the priestly ministry at Munich in 1533; the following year at Augsburg, in the church of St. Ulrich, he preached against Luther. At Eichstätt he held various offices, until in 1540 Bishop Moriz von Hutten appointed him suffragan of that diocese and he was consecrated titular bishop of Philadelphia. As representative of Bishop Martin von Schaumberg, he took part, from 16 July 1562 to 15 July 1563, in the Council of Trent, and vigorously opposed the concession in Germany of the chalice to the laity (XXII sess.).
His works include: Grund und Kundschaft aus göttlicher Geschrift und den hl. Vätern, dass Fleisch und Blut Christi in der hl. Mess scahrhftiglich geopfert werd (Eichstätt 1553), and German translations of certain writings by Hoffmeister and Cardinal Stanislao Hosius.
