HOFFMEISTER, JOHANN. - Augustinian preacher and controversialist, b. c. 1509, d. 21 Aug. 1547. He soon embraced the religious life, studied at Mainz and Freiburg im Br.; prior at Colmar in 1533, provincial in 1543, he was appointed by Seripando in 1546 vicar general for the German provinces. From 1530 until his death he worked tirelessly for the preservation of the faith in Germany and for the Catholic Reformation, earning the name of “Antilector” and the praise and friendship of St. Peter Canisius.
He wrote: *Canones ad interpretandas sacrae Bibliorum scripturas* (Mainz 1545); *Dialogorum libri duo* (Ingolstadt 1546); *Loci communes rerum theologicarum* (2nd ed., Antwerp 1546).
