GAVARDI, FEDERICO NICOLA

GAVARDI, FEDERICO NICOLA. - Augustinian theologian and preacher, b. in Milano on 15 Feb. 1640, d. on 12 June 1715. From 1665 to 1690 he taught theology in many convents of the Order, then Sacred Scripture at the Sapienza in Roma for 25 years.

He wrote: Theologia exantiquata iuxta orthodoxam b. Augustini doctrinam, a doctore fundatissimo Aegidio Columna expositam (6 vols., Napoli-Roma 1678-96). This is the most extensive theological course «ad mentem Aegidii Romani», abridged by B. Sichrowsky (4 vols., Norimberga 1720); Philosophia vindicata ab erroribus philosophorum iuxta doctrinam b. P. Augustini et Aegidii Columnae (Roma 1701); Futum adversus opus Petri de Marca, de concordia sacerdotii et imperii (manuscript). The personality and influence of G. still await a comprehensive study.
