FLANDINO, AMBROGIO. — Augustinian theologian, born in Naples ca. 1460, died on 24 Sept. 1531. In 1508 regent of the Bologna studium, in 1509 of that of Florence, in 1514 superior of the province of Naples, in 1517 (1 April) he was elected auxiliary bishop of Mantua. A preacher and representative of Christian humanism, he was one of Luther’s first opponents.
He wrote: De animarum immortalitate contra Petrum Pomponatium (Mantua 1519); Quadragesimulium concimum liber (Venice 1523); Quod non sit abroganda Missa secundum consuetudinum Romanæ Ecclesiae; Quod translatum sit a Christo in Petrum et successores eius verum sacerdotium et denique quod Missa sit verum sacrificium, adverens Lutherum. Only the first two were printed.
