Hanxleden, Johann Ernst

HANXLEDEN, JOHANN ERNST. - Indologist, b. in 1681 at Osterkappeln (Germany), d. on 21 March 1732 at Palur (India).

Having entered the Society of Jesus on 30 Nov. 1699, he soon set out for India by way of Asia Minor, Armenia and Persia. Arrived at Goa in Dec. 1700, he studied Malayalam and Sanskrit with very great success and composed dictionaries of these languages. Among the 14 works written by H. there is also a Life of Jesus in Malayalam verse. To date none of his writings has been published, but some have been used, for example, by Fr. Paulinus of St. Bartholomew, a Carmelite.
