HĀRIĜITI. - A heterodox Muslim sect, made up of a group of followers of the caliph 'Alī, who broke away from him when he accepted arbitration with his rival Mu'āwijah. The name h. (Arabic hārīg, plur. hawārīg) is the active participle of the root hr̥g "to go out", and has generally been interpreted as "those who go out (of the camp)", who withdraw. Recently M. Guidi, basing himself on the meaning of the root in the sārah o of the Koran, has instead understood it as "those who go out (into the field)", that is, those who, according to the duties of good Muslims, face battle against the enemy, considered an infidel.

Defeated by 'Alī at Nahrawān (658), the H. continued periodic agitations under the Umayyad caliphate; then they gradually died out. However, one of their branches of moderate tendencies, the Ibādites, spread through 'Omān, Zanzibar and North Africa, also forming political aggregates. Ibādite communities still remain in those regions.
