HENAO, GABRIEL de. - Jesuit theologian, b. at Valladolid on 20 July 1612, d. at Salamanca on 11 Feb. 1704. For many years he was professor of philosophy, dogmatic and moral theology, and Sacred Scripture in various houses of the Order.
His Eucharistic treatises are well known and esteemed: De Missae sacrificio divino atque tremendo (3 vols., Salamanca 1658, 1659, 1661); De Eucharistiae Sacramento venerabili atque sanctissimo (Lyons 1665). He defended Molinism in the works: Scientia media historica propugnata (Lyons 1655; 2nd ed., greatly enlarged, Salamanca 1665); Scientia media theologia defensa (Lyons 1674). The work Averiguaciones de las Antigüedades de Cantabria (Vizcaia, Guipúzcoa, Alava [Saragossa 1637]), apart from its historical value concerning the origins of the Cantabrians, provides highly valuable information on important families and ethnic groups.
