HENARES, DOMINGO, blessed. - Spanish Dominican, titular bishop of Pesseita, pro-vicar apostolic of Eastern Tonkin, martyred there on 25 June 1838.
Born at Baena (Cordova) on 19 Dec. 1765, he entered the Order in 1783 and in 1784 departed for the Philippines. Ordained at Manila (according to others at Vigan), he joined Bl. Delgado and reached Tonkin in 1790. Rector of the native College-seminary of Tien Chu, he was appointed pro-vicar in 1798 and, on 9 Sept. 1800, was elected bishop and coadjutor of the vicar apostolic Delgado by Pius VII. After almost half a century of active apostolate, he was beheaded at Nam Dinh. His remains, reassembled with the head that had been thrown into the Vi Hoang River and found by the faithful three days later, were buried at Luc-Thuy-Ha, and subsequently in the episcopal residence of Bui-Chu. He was beatified by Leo XIII, on 27 May 1900, together with other Annamite martyrs.
