DELGADO Y CEBRIÁN, CLEMENTE IGNACIO, Blessed. — Dominican, b. Nov. 23, 1761 (according to others in 1762; in the brief of beatification: 1763) at Villa-Felice (Saragossa); d. in prison, at Nam-Dinh, July 2, 1838. On Oct. 28, 1790, he reached Tonkin together with Bl. Henares; on Feb. 11, 1794, Pius VI named him bishop and coadjutor of Msgr. Alfonso, apostolic vicar of Eastern Tonkin, whom he succeeded on Feb. 2, 1799. In almost half a century of apostolate, he doubled the number of the faithful, founded colleges, built convents and churches, and promoted many natives to the priesthood. Captured on May 13, 1838, and shut in a cage, he died there from severe sufferings, a few hours before his decapitation, which was carried out on his corpse. His head, thrown into the Vi-Hoang, was found four months later by the faithful, who rejoined it to the body, which was lovingly buried at Bui-Chu. Beatified by Leo XIII on May 27, 1900, together with other martyrs of Annam.
