HUBER, JOHANN NĚPOMUK. - Catholic theologian and philosopher, b. in Munich on 18 Aug. 1830, d. there on 20 March 1879. From 1859 he was professor of philosophy and pedagogy in Munich.
In 1859 he published his celebrated work Die Philosophie der Kirchenväter, which, the following year, was placed on the Index). H. did not submit and began a campaign against Rome and against the Society of Jesus, through a series of articles, some anonymous, and through collaboration with Döllinger in the defence of the “Old Catholics.” Besides critical essays against Darwin, Strauss, Hartmann, and Haeckel, and the youthful work Über die Willensfreiheit (1858), he wrote, in collaboration with Döllinger, Der Papst und das Konzil (1876, under the pseudonym Janus), and the Römische Briefe (published under the pseudonym Quirious in the Allgemeine Zeitung). Other works: Die Idee der Unsterblichkeit (1864); Der Jesuitenorden (1873); Die religiöse Frage (1875); Die ethische Frage (1875), etc.
