«IESU DECUS ANGELICUM». — Hymn at Lauds on the feast of the Holy Name of Jesus, drawn from a composition of 49 strophes wrongly attributed to St BERNARD, entitled *Inbulus rhythmicus de nomine Iesu*, but by an unknown author of the first half of the 13th century, or possibly the late 12th (cf. A. Wilmart, *Le «Inbulus» sur le nom de Jésus, dit de St Bernard*, in *Eph. liturg.*, 57 [1943], pp. 222-227; he also provides the critical text).
These strophes extol the name of Jesus, which fills the heart with sweetness and irradiates the mind with light. The hymn was introduced into the Breviary by Innocent XII, who in 1721 extended the feast of the Holy Name of Jesus to the universal Church; the feast had been promoted in the 15th century by St BERNARDINE OF SIENA and St JOHN OF CAPESTRANO.
