«IESU DECUS ANGELICUM». – Hymn of the Lauds for the feast of the Name of Jesus, taken from a composition of 49 stanzas, wrongly attributed to St Bernard, entitled: Iubilus rytmicus de nomine Iesu, but by an unknown author from the first half of the 13th century, or the end of the 12th century (cf. A. Wilmart, Le «Iubilus» sur le nom de Jésus, dit de st Bernard, in Eph. liturg., 57 [1943], pp. 222–27; he also provides the critical text).
These stanzas praise the name of Jesus, which fills the heart with sweetness and radiates light upon the intellect. The hymn was introduced into the Breviary by Innocent XII, who in 1721 extended to the universal Church the feast of the Name of Jesus, promoted in the 15th century by St Bernardino da Siena and St Giovanni da Capestrano.
