INSIGNIA. - Both bishops and canons may use certain insignia.

The episcopal insignia are the zucchetto and the biretta of violet color, the pectoral cross, the gemmed ring, the mitre, the pastoral staff and special vestments. In accordance with the liturgical laws in force, bishops may use the special vestments from the moment of their appointment, whereas they may use the cross, the ring, the pastoral staff and the pontifical vestments only after consecration has taken place (can. 349 § 1, n. 2). The canons of cathedral and collegiate Chapters also have special insignia; these are not everywhere the same nor are they determined by common law, but they are established in the bull of erection or granted subsequently by apostolic privilege (can. 409 § 1). All the members of the Chapter, whether titular or honorary canons, may use them, always however within the territory of the diocese; outside the diocese they may use them only when they accompany the bishop, their ordinary, or when they represent him at councils or at other ecclesiastical solemnities; or when they represent the Chapter (can. 409 § 2).

Besides canons, beneficiaries also have the right to the use of special insignia.
