ISAAC, Saint. - Abbot of Monteluco. A native of Syria, he came to Italy in the first half of the 6th century, to escape the machinations of the Monophysites. Having settled on Monteluco near Spoleto, he at first led a retired life, then founded a monastery according to the system of the Palestinian laurae, which, however, after his death adopted the Rule of St. Benedict.

I. was famous for his life of prayer, for the healing of the sick, for the liberation of the possessed and for the prophetic spirit. His relics are preserved in Spoleto and his feast is celebrated on April 11.

Certain writings are attributed to I., especially 63 Sermons, which however belong to others, perhaps to Isaac of Antioch, who lived in the 5th century.
