JEANNERAT, GIUSEPPE. - Pontifical officer, born on 11 December 1813 in Switzerland, died on 27 November 1897 in Bologna. He entered the service of the Pope on 5 August 1835 in the foreign infantry, and as a lieutenant he took part in the entire Venetian campaign of 1848 against the Austrians, fighting at Vicenza on Monte Berico on 10 June of that year.
Promoted to major on 19 January 1859, he led the assault column in the capture of Perugia (20 June) and was then given command of the foreign carabinieri battalion. At Castelfidardo (18 September 1860) he distinguished himself so valiantly that he earned promotion to lieutenant colonel. An excellent soldier and shrewd organizer of troops, he made his battalion a model, so much so that he won the applause of French officers on the battlefield of Mentana (3 November 1867). skillfully commanded the third defense zone of Rome, along the critical stretch of the Aurelian Walls between the Macao and Porta San Giovanni, during the siege operations of 20 September 1870, and then retired to private life.
