KALBERMATTEN, WILHELM. - Papal general, b. at Brig in Valais (Switzerland) on 15 Nov. 1793, d. in Rome on 15 Dec. 1875. Summoned by Pius IX in 1850 to reorganize the two regiments of foreign infantry, he was admitted to the service of the Holy See on 17 June with the rank of brigadier general.

From 1854 he held command of the territorial division of Bologna and in June 1859 was able to prevent the revolutionary disturbances that had broken out in the Legations from spreading to the Marches and Umbria. Distinguished during the campaign of 1860 as commander of the military subdivisions, he was appointed in 1865 by Gen. Kanzler to the general inspectorate of all the troops and also served as a councillor at the Ministry of Arms. After 20 Sept. 1870 he retired to private life, devoting himself to works of assistance on behalf of former papal soldiers.
