JOLIVET, CHARLES-CONSTANT. - Born on 9 January 1826 at Pont-l'Abbé, diocese of Quimper, died at Durban on 15 October 1903; in 1848 he became an Oblate of Mary Immaculate.

Until 1867 he was in England, as a missionary and curate; in 1867 he became assistant general of the Congregation. In 1874 he was appointed vicar apostolic of Natal, which then comprised the whole of southern Africa outside the two vicariates of the Cape of Good Hope and the prelature of Mozambique. In 1886 the Orange Free State with Basutoland and the Transvaal were detached from it. Msgr. J. organized the ministry among the whites, in 1882 called in the Trappists, today the Religious of Mariannhill, for work among the blacks, and began the mission among the Indians.

He worked successfully in the charitable and educational field and called in the Sisters of the Holy Cross of Menzingen, the Dominicans who founded their own congregations at Oakford and Newcastle, and the Augustinian Sisters of Pont-l'Abbé.
