KOELLIN, KONRAD. — Dominican theologian, born at Ulma around 1476, died at Colonia on 26 August 1536. He entered religious life in his native city in 1492 and studied at Ulma and Heidelberg (1500), where he was master of the students, professor of theology, prior, and then regent (1507–10). In 1510 he was sent as regent to Basilea and the following year (1511) to the Studium of Colonia, a position he held until his death.
In 1527 he was appointed inquisitor for the dioceses of Magonza, Colonia, and Treviri. In this capacity he took part in the proceedings against the heretics Clarembach and Fliesteden (1528–29), and in 1533 directed the proceedings against Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, whose De occulta philosophia he condemned. In 1530 he prepared, together with other theologians, the refutation of the Augsburg Confession. K. was the first in Germany to introduce St. Thomas’s Summa theologiae as a scholastic textbook. His commentary on the 1a–2ae was published in 1512 at the urgent insistence of the Faculty of Theology of Heidelberg (Expositio commentaria prima subtilissima simul ac lucidissima, Colonia 1512). His teaching also produced: Quodlibeta viginti septem (ivi 1523). Against Luther he wrote: Eversio Lutherani epithalami (ivi 1527) and Adversus caninas M. Lutheri nuptias (Tubinga 1530).
