LAFAGE, JUSTE-ADRIEN. — Composer and musicologist, b. in Paris on 28 March (according to some, 27 March) 1801 (according to some, 1805), d. there on 8 March 1862. A pupil of Choron in Paris and of Baini in Rome (1828–29), he was maestro di cappella at St-Étienne-du-Mont in Paris from 1833 onwards; he then undertook study trips to Italy, Germany, Spain, and England.
He published various studies, including the *Manuel complet de musique vocale et instrumentale* (Paris 1836–38), *Séméologie musicale* (ibid. 1844), *Histoire générale de la musique et de la danse* (ibid. 1844), *Miscellanée musicale* (ibid. n.d.), biographical notices on P. S. Mattei, Zingarelli, Baini, Choron, Donizetti, etc.; and *De la reproduction des livres de plain-chant romain* (Paris 1853). In 1859 he founded the periodical *Le plain-chant* and contributed to many other journals. He also published collections of church music: *Motetrum Liber I* (1832–35), *Liber II* (1837); *Psalmi Vespertini quaternis vocibus cum organo* (1834), etc.
